SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation announced on Friday that for the next few weeks, through mid-August, West Columbus Avenue will be closed from I-291 to Gridiron Street, Sunday’s through Thursday’s, from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The MassDOT will also close portions of Clinton Street and Liberty Street between East and West Columbus Avenues during the same time. All roads will be reopened to traffic during daytime hours, and people will still be able to access the local businesses.
The purpose of the road closures is to protect drivers from demolition work on the I-91 viaduct, according to MassDOT. The following detours will be in place:
- Traffic on Temporary Exit 7-6 from I-91 South, or from Route 20 West/Birnie Avenue, should take the on-ramp to I-291 East and take Exit 2 for Chestnut Street. Turn right on Chestnut Street, turn right on Liberty Street, then turn left on Dwight Street. Turn right on State Street and continue onto West Columbus Avenue.
- Traffic on East Columbus Avenue destined to travel southbound should take Emery Street and turn right on Main Street. Turn left on Liberty Street, then turn left on Dwight Street. Turn right on State Street and continue onto West Columbus Avenue.
During the daytime, MassDOT will continue to close the left lane on West Columbus Avenue from I-291 to Gridiron Street, Monday’s through Friday’s, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., through mid-August. Also, a portion of Clinton Street between East and West Columbus Avenues will be closed, as needed; so drivers should use Liberty Street instead.
