I-91 south in Springfield to be closed on August 1st & 2nd

Closures are scheduled of overnight, and will be open by 5:00 a.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation plans to close I-91 south and Exit 1A on I-291 west, so the contractor can replace bearings on the viaduct.

On Monday, August 1st and Tuesday, August 2nd, from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Exit 1A will be closed from I-291 west to I-91 south; and then from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., I-91 south will be closed and traffic will be routed to Exit 7-6.


Continuing Coverage: I-91 Reconstruction


The following detours will in place during the closures:

  • To continue to I-91 South (refer to Stage 1B detours for details and maps): Take temporary Exit 7-6 and merge onto West Columbus Avenue. Continue south onto East Columbus Avenue through the rail underpass. Bear right onto West Columbus Avenue behind the I-91 North Garage. Continue onto Hall of Fame Avenue. After passing Union Street, use the left lane to merge onto the on-ramp to I-91 South.
  • To reach downtown destinations from I-91 South: Take temporary Exit 7-6 and merge onto West Columbus Avenue. Turn left onto Boland Way.
  • To reach I-91 South from I-291 West: Take Exit 2B on I-291 West and follow signs for Dwight Street. Turn left on Dwight Street, then turn right on State Street. Turn left on Main Street, then turn right on Bliss Street. Turn right onto East Columbus Avenue. Turn left on State Street, then turn left on West Columbus Avenue/Hall of Fame Avenue, and bear left after crossing Union Street, to merge onto I-91 South.
