Hiker plans to summit mountains for kidney cancer research

Weeklong expedition done to honor hiker's grandfather

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – John Thompson, a 24-year-old hiker from central Massachusetts has come up with a fitting memorial for his grandfather, a staff physician at Baystate Medical Center. Dr. John Carey of Longmeadow lost his life to kidney cancer last year at the age of 83.

To honor his grandfather’s memory, John Thompson will spend one week hiking New England’s highest mountains to raise money for cancer research. “I like hiking. I love the outdoors,” Thompson said. “My grandfather always pushed me to work as hard as I could, push myself to the limit when I’m passionate about something.”

Thompson will begin his memorial hiking journey August 7th. So far, he’s raised $6,200 toward his goal of $10,000 to assist cancer research. You can find out how to support cancer research by visiting the 4kers for Kidneys website.
