GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – With temperatures soaring into the 90’s and heat indexes approaching 110 degrees, staying hydrated remains critical. But health experts and athletes say that isn’t the only thing you can do.
Taking simple steps like upping fruits and vegetables can go a long way. Things like watermelon and cantaloupe both contain a lot of water, along with necessary nutrients and minerals.
But to spice it up, Pitt County dietitian Jackie Sugg has some advice. “Taking berries like strawberries or blueberries and adding them to ice cube trays and then freezing them,” she said. “You can also add fresh fruit to your water, we call that fruit infused water.”
Beyond that, you can also make staying cool and hydrated fun with your kids. Simply pureeing fruits like watermelon and cantaloupe to make freeze pops can be entertaining and healthy.
For athletes and trainers alike, remaining hydrated and full of electrolytes is even more important. “One of the main things we’re doing is trying to get our clients to stay ahead of the game,” said Skyler Woolard, a strength coach at CrossFit Tier 1 in Greenville. “So at home hydrating, not waiting until the gym to actually start drinking water.”
Woolard’s gym relies solely on fans, with temperatures in this heat easily reaching 100 degrees. Despite the hot and humid weather, he said they haven’t really seen a drop off in people coming to work out.
However, he did advise people against doing something that is pretty popular. “Don’t just dump water on your head that’s cold, that actually restricts everything and makes it a little harder to cool off,” he said.
Woolard also recommended getting plenty of protein and also carbs, which he added helps to retain water in the body.
