NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Downtown Northampton was even busier than usual on Thursday. Dozens of merchants lined the Main Street sidewalk for what has become, for many people, an annual shopping tradition. The sales will continue through Sunday.
It’s a time where Main Steet merchants showcase their goods on the sidewalk for a discount. There are stores from inside Thornes Marketplace and up and down Main Street, everything from clothing stores and gift shoppes to restaurants and art galleries.
People like Sunderland resident Louise Krieger told 22News that it’s a great way to socialize and support the local economy. “I’m glad they are back. It’s nice to be out,” she said. “It’s great to see people wandering the local shops. I think there is a lot of shopping going on online and it’s a lot more fun to come down and see people and interact with the local business people and have a sense of community.”
The annual sidewalk sales are under new organization this year. Northampton’s newly formed DNA or Downtown Northampton Association is working with the Chamber of Commerce and Thornes Marketplace to organize the shopping specials that were once organized by the former Business Improvement District.
