MASHPEE, Mass. (AP) — Police say a standoff has ended peacefully after an armed man barricaded himself inside a Massachusetts store and threatened to harm himself and officers.

It started just after noon Wednesday in Mashpee. Police had received a call to check on the East Falmouth man’s well-being.

Police say the 41-year-old man remained inside the store for about seven hours before surrendering. They say he was armed with an AR-15 assault-style weapon and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Police say the strip mall on Route 28 was evacuated at around 1 p.m. and a negotiator responded to the scene.

No injuries were reported after the standoff ended around 7:35 p.m. Police say the man was hospitalized for a mental health evaluation. He wasn’t identified.

No charges have been filed.
