Springfield church hosts picnic for homeless

Social service agency personnel were also there to provide help for the homeless

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A compassionate gesture by a Springfield inner-city church Saturday. A picnic in the park for the homeless.

Progressive community Baptist church provided lunch at Forest Park for hundreds of homeless men and women. Social service agency personnel were also there to provide help for the homeless.

The Reverend, Joe Long Jr., told 22News, of his church’s long involvement with this cookout for the homeless, “This event has been going on for about 18 years now and this collaboration of community organizations and our church made this a special day for those less fortunate in our greater Springfield area.

Pastor Long noted that the turnout of several hundred was the largest it’s been since these cookouts for the homeless began almost 20 years ago.
