Weather Alert Day: Intense downpours, a few strong storms possible Thursday

Downpours will bring much needed rain, but possibly too much too quickly

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The 22News Storm Team has declared Thursday to be a Weather Alert Day in anticipation of intense downpours and the possibility for an isolated strong or severe thunderstorm during the second half of the day.

Threats:

  • Intense rain causing street flooding (Main Threat)
  • Lightning
  • Gusty Winds
  • Small Hail

Timing:

  • 1pm-9pm
  • Storms fade as sun sets

Storm Type and Coverage:

  • Pulse Storms: Pop up, bring downpours and lightning and then fade away
  • Storms will likely be isolated at first, but then turn more scattered mid to late afternoon

What to Do?:

  • During intense downpours: If streets are flooded “turn around, don’t drown” to stay safe.
  • Keep an eye on small streams and creeks
  • If you hear thunder, head indoors
  • If any severe thunderstorms develop, get inside a sturdy building away from windows
