Syrian refugees possibly coming to Northampton in the fall

Northampton City Councilors unanimously passed a resolution in December

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Within the next year, there could be 51 Syrian refugees living in the City of Northampton.

There’s a host community application that’s currently pending state approval. If granted, Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz said refugees would arrive sometime after October 1st.

John Harris of Northampton told 22News he supports the idea; “Our nation has always been made up of immigrants, so why exclude them? We should be equal to anybody and everybody, and there’s crisis in that part of the world. I think we should participate.”

Northampton City Councilors unanimously passed a resolution in December that gave residents the chance to offer refugees shelter in their own homes.
