SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The American Red Cross has issued an emergency request for blood and platelet donations. They need to replenish an extremely low summer blood supply.
The Independence Day holiday likely caused many regular donors to postpone donations because of vacation plans. A Red Cross poll showed that more than 75% of donors surveyed had vacation plans during the summer, especially the weeks before and after July 4.
“Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, which is why we are making this emergency request for donations,” said Nick Gehrig, communications director, Red Cross Blood Services.
If you would like to help, and donate blood, you can schedule an appointment by:
The Red Cross is extending hours at many donation sites to allow for more donors to make an appointment to give. To avoid long wait times, donors are encouraged to complete a RapidPass online health history questionnaire.
