Motorcycle group paying homage to the Van Buren Sisters

The ladies are encouraging the public to come out and support the ride

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 100 women motorcycle riders from across the country met Monday night to refuel before their big cross country ride.

Motorists gathered in downtown Springfield for dinner and to watch the fireworks. The Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Group is paying homage to the Van Buren Sisters, the first two women to ride cross country.

Alisa Clickenger, event organizer, told 22News why the trip is so important. She said, “I like Adeline and Augusta Van Buren’s example of standing up for what you believe and if you want to prove something to world, go out and do it.”

The Van Buren sisters rode across country to prove to the U.S. government that they were just as good as men, and could serve as dispatch riders in the military.

The ladies leave Wednesday morning; they’re encouraging the public to come out and support the ride.
