Mosque to sue central Massachusetts town after cemetery rejected

DUDLEY, Mass. (AP) — A lawyer for a central Massachusetts mosque seeking to build a Muslim cemetery says he’s planning to sue after town officials denied the plan a crucial permit.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports Jason Talerman, lawyer for the Islamic Society of Greater Worcester, intends to file suit Friday in land court in Boston.

He’s challenging a decision by the Dudley Zoning Board of Appeals earlier this month.

The mosque has a purchase agreement for 55 acres of former farmland that it wants to develop into the cemetery.

Residents say they oppose the cemetery based on traffic and environmental concerns, but Talerman suggests anti-Muslim bias is a factor.

Dudley’s Board of Health has also denied the project a necessary approval.

The newspaper says the town’s lawyer didn’t comment.
