Curiosity spots wind-sculpted dunes on Mars

Scientists say the larger ripples have distinctive sinuous crest lines

(CNN) – Scientists believe this photo may provide clues to the atmospheric history of mars. NASA’s curiosity mars rover captured this image of sand dunes on the red planet.

There are two sizes of wind-sculpted ripples evident in the image. Sand dunes and the smaller type of ripples that also exist on earth, but the larger ripples are not found here.

Scientists say the larger ripples have distinctive sinuous crest lines. NASA says curiosity made the first up-close study of active sand dunes anywhere other than earth.
