4th of July travel forecast

This is the biggest Fourth of July travel on record and five million more travelers compared to Memorial Day weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – This Fourth of July weekend is predicted to be one of the biggest travel weekends on record.

AAA Pioneer Valley projects nearly 43 million Americans will travel this Independence Day weekend, with close to 1.1 million of those travelers being from Massachusetts.

This is the biggest Fourth of July travel on record and five million more travelers compared to Memorial Day weekend.

MassDOT has suspended work starting Friday and they won’t start back up until business hours on Tuesday.

Anyone who is used to traveling on I-91 south through downtown Springfield, expects to see delays at the 291 split daily, but with all the additional travelers for the holiday weekend you can expect to see even more volume down there.

State police will be out in full force looking for anyone driving under this influence. Electronic signs on I-91 Friday morning are warning residents to find a designated driver or they will be arrested.

If you plan on heading southbound through Springfield this weekend give yourself some extra time. Early morning hours are the best time to leave for the weekend.
