Herbs for cooking & cosmetic: “K” for KELP

CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal)  You can use herbs for so much more than cooking!  Carol Joyce is the Owner of White Buffalo Herbs in Warwick showed us how to use Kelp in cooking & cosmetics.

TASTE of SEA Rice

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • ¼ tsp. dried thyme or tsp fresh thyme, chopped
  • 1/2 cup soaked kelp, chopped
  • 3 cups warm cooked brown rice
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • sea salt  & cayenne to taste
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • ½ tsp. Daily Dash (optional)
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced

Directions

  • 1.  Put oil in skillet & warm.
  • 2. Add onion & carrot & sauté for 2 min.
  • 3. Add garlic & stir for 1 min.
  • 4. Stir in kelp & cook 3 min.
  • 5. Add rice & stir.
  • 6. Sprinkle with cayenne & Daily Dash (to taste)

Delicious HOT as a side dish or serve cold with Italian dressing stirred in for a light lunch.

*Sprinkle dried kelp on foods for a savory, salty flavor-so good for you!

SEA SPIRIT Face Mask

  • ¼ cup dried, powdered Kelp
  • 3 drops Spearmint or Lavender Essential Oil (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Kaolin Clay
  • Glass jar with lid
    Directions
  • 1. Mix dried ingredients together.
  • 2. Add optional essential oil (do not use peppermint or tea tree…they are too strong for face)
  • 3. Pour into jar & cap for later use.
  • Put 1 teaspoon on palm of hand, add warm water & mis into a paste.
  • Apply to face (avoid eyes) & let sit for 15 min (close your eyes & enjoy some music! Relax!)
  • Rinse off with warm water. Ahhh!

SEA SPIRIT Bath Salts

  • ¼ cup dried & crushed KELP
  • 1 cup Sea Salt (or Epsom salts)
  • 30 drops Essential Oils, optional

Directions

  • 1. Mix dried ingredients together.
  • 2. Add essential oil (optional) & stir.   Store in tightly covered jar. Add ¼ cup to bath for a weekly detoxifying soak!
  • *Kelp baths are traditionally used to help detox your body therefore removing impurities & aiding your ability to lose weight & feel better, overall.
