SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Wilbraham Avenue in Springfield will remain closed throughout Tuesday morning, due to a large fire at the former Massachusetts Career Development Institute building that started Monday morning.
Springfield Fire Department Spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News they first got to 140 Wilbraham Ave. around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning.
He said the flames and thick smoke were so intense, crews had to knock down some of the building’s walls, in an attempt to separate the burning part of the building from the rest of it. Leger also said high winds caused the fire to spread quickly.
Fire crews had to stay on Wilbraham Avenue all night, to prevent hidden pockets of fire from flaring back up.
Police Captain Brian Keenan told 22News Wilbraham Avenue will remain closed throughout the morning.
The Springfield Arson and Bomb Squad are still trying to figure out how the fire started. Leger said nearby neighbors had reported seeing people going in and out of the building on occasion, but they haven’t been able to confirm that.
No injuries were reported.
