CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – A lot people people will be taking road trips for the July Fourth Holiday. But before you drive off, you may want to think about what you’re leaving behind.
“Make sure your affairs are in order,” said Kevin Brador of Springfield. “You never know who is going to come by and do you dirty.”
Keeping your property free from newspapers, mail, and even trash can all help your home stay safe when you’re on vacation. You can do this by calling your delivery services and temporarily ask them to stop dropping off packages, papers and mail. They’ll hold your items until you get home.
Your neighbors could also help. They can bring in your newspapers and mail when you’re gone. Piled up papers, packages, and mail are an invitation for anyone who wants to rob your house.
Chicopee Police Officer Mike Wilk told 22News, “They spend their day looking for houses where there is no one home they’ll drive by they’ll take packages and unfortunately sometimes they;ll go back at night and steal things. Unless you have somebody checking your house, it’s like that for days.”
Officer Wilk also recommends not posting vacation plans on social media accounts, this could be another invitation for burglars to target the house.
Chicopee residents can notify the police when you take a vacation. If you leave a contact number and the dates you’re going away, Wilk said officers will check your house every day.
