Domestic violence benefit held for Agawam victim to be remembered

Money raised will go to help others in a dangerous relationship to access support and services

domestic abuse 4AGAWAM, Mass (WWLP) – The family and friends of a domestic violence victim made sure she will not be forgotten. Saturday, people who knew Renee Herbert gathered in Agawam for a benefit. She was a mother of three who was killed two months ago in West Springfield by her husband, Peter Doherty.

The money raised from Saturday’s benefit will go to help others who feel trapped in a dangerous relationship to access support and services.

Renee’s aunt, Brenda Vezina said, “It makes me sick. It makes me sad. It makes me angry. And so with that anger and that sickness and that sadness I’m intending to turn that into something good for other victims and other families with this organization, Worth.”

Doherty had a lengthy criminal past, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was also found guilty of stealing a TV from Dr. Dental on Boston Road in Springfield in 2010.
