Recreational marijuana legalization in Massachusetts

The question of legalizing recreational marijuana is one step closer to becoming a ballot question

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Legalizing recreational marijuana is one step closer to becoming a reality here in Massachusetts and four different companies have applied for medical marijuana dispensary licenses in Amherst.

Supporters of legalizing recreational marijuana say they plan to file more than 25,000 voter signatures with city and town clerks by the Wednesday deadline. Only 10,792 certified signatures are required at this stage, but sponsors of ballot initiatives typically try to gather much more in case some signatures are disqualified for various reasons.

This comes as more Medical marijuana dispensaries are trying to make there way to western Massachusetts. Amherst’s interim Town Manager told 22News two of the four companies who submitted applications, have already received a special town zoning permit. They all still need state approval though.

A proposed location that has already received a special permit from Amherst Zoning board of appeals is at 169 Meadow Street. Their next hearing is July 9 for state approval. Another location that does have a permit with Amherst is 55 University Drive. Their next hearing is June 30.

Two companies still need to get a permit from Amherst. One of the is at 85 University Drive and the other proposed site for a medical marijuana dispensary is at 422 Amity Street which is right where Rafters Sports Bar & Restaurant is located.

Now the question of legalizing recreational marijuana is one step closer to becoming a ballot question.
