WRENTHAM, Mass. (WWLP) – State police say that a driver not paying attention to traffic ended up crashing into a construction sign, which smashed into the windshield, cutting him in the forehead.

According to Massachusetts State Police Media Relations, 18 year-old Eric DiMasi of Tiverton, Rhode Island struck the sign on I-495 southbound in Wrentham, after drifting into the median. According to the police report, DiMasi said that he didn’t realize until it was too late that there was a merge in traffic up ahead and that cars were slowing down. He tried to stop the car, but lost control, and ended up striking the sign.

DiMasi was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of his wound, and is expected to be okay.

State police say that the episode serves a lesson to remind drivers to be conscious of work zones.

“The results of this crash could have been much worse for this driver. The moral of the story? Drive at reasonable speeds, pay attention to the traffic in front of you, and slow down when approaching construction zones. Your only responsibility as a driver is to pay attention to operation of your vehicle and be aware of the traffic around you. Do not let yourself become distracted from that responsibility,” State Police posted on their official Facebook page.
