Karen Williams survives painful encounter with angry mother bear while running in New Mexico marathon.

(KOB) A New Mexico woman is recovering after a painful encounter with an angry mother bear.

Karen Williams was nearing the end of the Valles Caldera Marathon Saturday when she was attacked by the bear.

She says she was knocked to the ground, raked with claws and bitten.

Williams was able to roll into a ball and play dead until the bear retreated and another runner came to her rescue.
