Deerfield Police stepping up patrols in a popular recreation area

22News found out why police are focused on this location

DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Deerfield Police Department told 22News they’ll assign an officer to work the Stillwater recreational area for 6 hours every weekend, during the day, to promote safety.

The Stillwater area is popular for swimming, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Deerfield Police want to keep people from littering, heavy drinking, and jumping off the bridge, which have been persistent problems there.

The officers will also enforce open container laws and parking regulations.

Don Palmer of Leeds said, “It wouldn’t hurt to come by and make sure people aren’t parking illegally over in the other area there and people are actually here fishing and enjoying the outdoors.”

Deerfield Patrolman Adam Sokoloski told 22News they have had calls from several neighbors requesting a police presence. Police have had to respond to reports of people hurting themselves there in the past, they hope to keep this from happening.
