BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) – Students at Jabish Brook Middle School in Belchertown held a sit-in on Monday in support for one of their teachers. The teacher was laid off because of budget reasons and seniority.
It all started after a position was eliminated at Belchertown High School. The district decided to move that teacher to Jabish Brook Middle School, and cut a new teacher there instead.
Belchertown’s Superintendent of Schools, Karol Coffin told 22News, the decision wasn’t easy. “We’re not happy about this,” she said. “We would like to keep her. The students really have appreciated her at the middle school. Unfortunately because of her licensing and when she was hired she will be the person who is going to be laid off.”
Superintendant Coffin said a position needed to be eliminated because of a lack of state funding. She said that could lead to more lay offs in the school district in the future.
