SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Construction crews started working underneath Interstate 91 in Springfield, Thursday night, on the beams that help support the highway.
Due to the construction, a section of I-91 northbound was shutdown, and all cars and trucks traveling northbound are being detoured off of Exit 6 toward downtown Springfield. Then, drivers have to merge onto East Columbus Avenue, and hop back on the highway near Exit 9. Just stay left there to get back onto I-91.
Crews are expected to be working on these support beams until 5 o’clock Friday morning. At that point, the section of I-91 north will reopen to traffic.
Any drivers who need to take I-291, will have to follow a completely different detour. Take Exit 6 toward Downtown Springfield, and merge onto East Columbus Avenue and continue straight. Turn right onto Liberty Street and then turn left onto Chestnut Street, and turn right onto the I-291 eastbound ramp.
