The critters that roam in your backyard at night

We don't have to worry about alligators, but there is wildlife that we do need to be aware of

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – For us here in the Northeast, we don’t have to worry about alligators, but there is wildlife that we do need to be aware of.

We are fortunate to not have some of the predators that you will find in the rest of the nation, but an unfortunate event like what happened to the boy in Orlando makes people wonder what wildlife is in their own backyard.

Here in the Northeast, the larger animals that people need to be aware of are bears, bob cats, fisher cats, and coyotes. These animals will usually run away once they hear noise, and will usually not be aggressive towards humans unless agitated or disturbed.

22News spoke with Allison Strong, Agawam Animal Control Officer about what happened in Florida. She said, “From what I’m learning this is really unusual behavior and it’s not something that’s very common. If we think about it from a logical standpoint. We would hear about it a lot more often if it is something we need to be concerned about. I think this was really just an unfortunate mishap with this creature.”

Strong said if you do see animals that are acting aggressive and strange do not hesitate to call your local animal control officer.
