Pollen continues to make for difficult allergy season

Grass pollen season will continue into early August

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It was another sunny, dry and breezy day and that is leading to a lot of pollen in the air. You’ve probably even seen it coating your car. If you’re an allergy sufferer then you’ve likely been feeling the effects this year.

“I’ve had a lot of trouble with allergies and I take stuff for it all the time and it usually works but this year it hasn’t worked as well,” said Christine Irujo of Westfield.

One of the main reasons this year has been so bad is that the tree pollen and grass pollen seasons have overlapped.

“There’s been a lot of people coming in lately complaining of allergic sinusitis symptoms. The sneezing, the itchy eyes the runny nose, wheezing,” said allergist Dr. Robert McGovern.

If over the counter medications don’t work then there are some other things you can try.

“You can stay indoors use your air conditioner to filter out the pollen. Take a shower or wash your hair after you go outside, keep the pollen out of your bed so you’re not breathing it all night,” said Dr. McGovern.

The tree pollen season will be coming to an end soon but the grass pollen season will continue into early August.

Tree pollen is medium with grass pollen on the high side right now. Some rain would help to wash the pollen out of the air.
