GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It was a solemn day in Greenfield as people gathered to pay tribute to Jacob Garmalo.
A memorial mass was held today for the 21 year old corrections officer at Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield. Garmalo’s family and friends were there along with local area law enforcement and members of the franklin county sheriff’s department.
Garmalo was a correctional officer at the Franklin County House of Correction. He died when his motorcycle crashed into a car a block away from the Franklin county Jail. He had just completed an overnight shift and was heading home to Leyden.
A Lieutenant who helped trained Garmalo told 22News, “Jake” stood out from the rest.
Lt. Tony Nevue said, “He had a lot of heart. He was a wonderful young man, great sense of humor and really just a pleasure to be around. We’re going to miss him greatly.”
Garmalo was supposed to graduate from a police training program on Thursday night. It would have promoted him to deputy sheriff. Jacob’s 22nd birthday was just over three weeks away on July 4th.
