SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For more than 25 years deserving high students in Western Massachusetts have received $2,500 college scholarships in the name of the late Springfield congressman Edward Boland.
His widow, attorney Mary Boland, continued that tradition Sunday at the Edward P. Boland Elementary School in Springfield. She told 22News, “This is the 26th year we’ve given 200 scholarships to students in Western Massachusetts. We interview them, we know them, and they’re just wonderful students.”
Ryan Dunn, of East Longmeadow, explained, “Every bit helps especially when expenses are so high and they climb every year to get a scholarship in the name of Edward Boland is very important to me.”
The late Congressman Edward Boland had served in congress from 1952 until his retirement in 1988. Mary Boland said her husband was a fervent believer in education.
