Sunlight partly to blame for recent storms

The area did see some hail Tuesday

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Western Massachusetts started the last couple of days with sunshine, but with clouds, showers and storms moving in during the afternoon.

On days like Wednesday, just because it’s sunny when you wake up doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way. It was a bit cooler out there Wednesday, and even though we started the day with sunshine, clouds quickly filled in this afternoon.

The reason for this is that there is colder air in the upper levels of the atmosphere. The sun warms the air near the ground, it rises into the cooler air above, condenses and forms clouds and showers.

In some cases, because the air is so cold the rain drops in the clouds freeze. Updrafts keep the ice pellets in the clouds where they can become bigger. Eventually, they fall to the ground as hail.

If a disturbance also passes through, it can trigger strong to severe thunderstorms.

The area did see some hail Tuesday, and there were some strong gusty winds that brought a few trees down.
