CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – One thing I’ve learned: those lusty European directors certainly know how to make steam-heated thrillers that boil over with erotic intrigue.
“A Bigger Splash” tells the passionate tale of an ill-fated romantic reunion between former lovers and their current companions.
Dakota Johnson of “50 Shades of Grey” fame plays the teenage seductress, whose role it is to come between Tilda Swinton and her partner, the fine Belgian actor, Mathias Schoenarts.
Scheming Ralph Fiennes hasn’t been this despicable since playing the sadistic Nazi concentration camp commandant in “Schindler’s List.”
Johnson’s tactics are to bore from within, driving the lovers apart.
The emotions start sizzling on a lush Italian island, like so many illicit love affairs with a strictly European backdrop.
It’s actually fun watching their emotions reacting to the sexual chess game. And their reluctance to keep their clothes on for too much of the time.
And of course, the teenage Vixen follows her marching orders to the letter.
As you can tell, Dakota Johnson learned a lot from “Fifty Shades of Grey”, but “A Bigger Splash” will look a lot better on her resume.
The stylish thriller is the kind of sophisticated entertainment that demanding audiences still crave.
For them and for me, “A Bigger Splash” makes quite a splash with 3 stars.
You can’t imagine the devious things that happen on that romantic Italian island.
