Diet of the Week: Vegan

CHICOPEE, Mass. (Mass Appeal)  Every week, Seth is trying out a diet plan – this week: Vegan Diet.  His tour guide is Dr. Laura Christoph, a professor of nutrition at Holyoke Community College.

Understanding the Vegan Diet

A diet that eliminates all animal products. You could even eliminate all clothing and hygienic products made using animal testing or from animal derivatives.

Foods List

  • No meat
  • No chicken
  • No fish
  • No eggs
  • No yogurt
  • No milk
  • Watch complimentary proteins

Types of Vegetarianism:

  • Semi-Vegetarian – Eating no red meat
  • Pescatarian – Eating only fish
  • Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian – Eating eggs and dairy products

Pros:

  • No cholesterol
  • High in fiber
  • Lower saturated fats

Cons:

  • Nutrient deficiency
  • Lack of iron & B12
