CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, the Massachusetts Conservation and Recreation Department opens its Western Massachusetts state parks for the summer season on Friday.
Anna Ruiz and Jacqueline Sanchez of Springfield intend on spending much of Memorial Day at Chicopee Memorial State Park. They plan on swimming and lounging on the beach and having a cook out.
“Fun, music, everybody hanging out together the way it should be,” said Ruiz.
“Because it’s a beautiful day to get to enjoy your family. Having a good time and just enjoy the sun having a good old time,” said Sanchez.
Summer hours for Chicopee Memorial State Park are 9AM to 6PM but nearby Hampton pond state park in Westfield will be open from 10AM until 5PM in the afternoon. Another Western Massachusetts getaway destination is prepared for another busy Memorial Day weekend.
Boating is a favorite past time on Congamond lakes in Southwick. Jeff Battles lives in Southwick and he’s already planning his day, “Probably in the water. It’ll get busty here, Congamond will be busy, yeah, I hope everybody’s safe.”
By doing some kayaking on Thursday, Jeff Harlow of West Springfield hopes to make the best of all worlds this holiday weekend, “I came to beat the crowd, do a little fishing then go and open up the pool where I’ll spend the Memorial Day weekend.”
Just some of the people in Western Massachusetts who’ll spend their holiday weekend close to home.
