SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP/AP) – Two men from Holyoke were arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 71-year-old Springfield man on January 25, 2016.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni identified the suspects as 32-year-old Jose Villegas Rodriguez and 24-year-old Edward Gonzalez. They were arraigned Thursday morning on murder charges in Springfield District Court.

22News first reported back in January when Springfield Police responded to a reported shooting around 5:45 p.m. Monday outside a house at 38 Brookline Avenue. When the officers arrived, they found Juan Zayas, who had died from gunshot wounds.

DA Gulluni added that Rodriguez was wanted by Chicopee Police for a brutal bar beating. He was charged with assaulting the bar owner at the Chiefs Lounge last July.

Authorities have not released a possible motive for the shooting. The two men were held without bail.

Zayas, whose son is a state trooper, was Springfield’s first homicide victim of 2016.
