Red Cross kicks off summer of blood drives

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The American Red Cross wants to remind you that there is a need for blood year round. On Thursday, the Red Cross began it’s summer campaign with a blood drive at Tower Square in Springfield.

According to Red Cross Communications Manager Alyson Barraza, every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. “The demand is always there,” she told 22News. “We do see, typically a drop in donations. So we just want to make sure that we keep that supply high without running into a shortage.”

Barraza says that 14,000 units of blood are collected across the country everyday. On Saturday, June 4th the West Springfield Police and Fire departments are teaming up with the Red Cross for the Battle of the Badges blood drive.
