Kids introduced to technology at a younger age than ever

Many parents were surprised to learn that 40% of kids have a social media account by age 11

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A new report shows that kids are getting introduced to technology younger than ever before. According to a new report on technology and kids, the average age for a child to get their first smartphone is 10 years old.

Tablets are device for most kids in the car at 55%, but nearly two thirds of kids have access to the internet from either their own laptop or tablet. Up from 42% in 2012.

Parents told 22News they’re concerned that putting advanced technology in the hands of young kids can hurt their socialization and overstimulate them at a young age, putting them at greater risk for A.D.D.

Others told 22News they worry about innocent minds being exposed to security threats and apps where they can easily be contacted by strangers.

Kait Maloney, of Westhampton told 22News, “Oh that’s way, way, way too young. The last thing kids need is another thing to keep them attached to a screen. Yeah when they are older and actually use applications that can be useful.”

Many parents who we talked with were surprised to learn that 40% of kids have a social media account by age 11.
