(CNN) – The House and Senate are pushing separate proposals to get money for the fight against the spread of the Zika virus.

The World Health Organization is calling Zika a global health emergency. The virus has been linked to devastating birth defects, and a rare autoimmune disorder that can lead to paralysis.

House Republicans unveiled a 622-million dollar Zika research funding proposal on Monday and it goes up for a vote Wednesday. That’s about half of the one-point-one billion a bipartisan senate group is pushing and that goes up for a vote Tuesday.

Both proposals are far short of the initial one-point-nine billion request from the White House.
