Chicopee celebrating 23 years as a Tree City USA

Chicopee Arbor Day

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Chicopee held its annual Arbor Day celebration Tuesday. The celebration included the planting of eight American Liberty Elm trees at Rivers Park on Meadow Street. This species of elm has been selected for its resistance to diseases, ability to tolerate roadside conditions, and increase shade.

22News talked to Chicopee Planning Director Lou Pouliot who said that after the October Snowstorm of 2011, some people have increased fears about their older trees falling over.

“With proper care and proper oversight and maintenance, trees have much more benefits than they do danger,” Pouliot said.

Chicopee will also celebrate its 23rd consecutive year as a Tree City USA. The award is given annually by the National Arbor Day Foundation to communities that work to promote tree care and planting.
