SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An exodus from the financially-troubled island of Puerto Rico has benefited the western Massachusetts Hispanic community.
The Springfield-based Latino Chamber of Commerce has monitored the influx of newcomers to the Puerto Rican neighborhoods of Springfield and Holyoke. Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jose Rubero told 22News that most newcomers are either professionals, or have their own business.
“They’re helping us in a service, they’re coming here to help us out, there are businesses- this is not creating a demand on social infrastructure. Their coming to Massachusetts will be helping us out,” Rubero said.
Rubero confirmed that a lack of housing in the city’s North End is a drawback to the newcomers settling in Springfield, where their businesses would be located.
