Student taken to hospital after school van crash

Student was from Valley West School in Chicopee

DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Three people were taken to the hospital after a car and school van collided in Deerfield Monday afternoon.

Deerfield Police Sgt. Harry Ruddock said the two vehicles crashed on Greenfield Road near Richardson’s Candy Kitchen just after 3:00 p.m. Both drivers were taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center by ambulance and are expected to be okay.

One student from the school van was also taken to Baystate Franklin with minor injuries, said Sgt. Ruddock. Two other students in the van were not injured and were picked up by family members. The school van was carrying children from Valley West School in Chicopee to Franklin County homes.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation; no word yet if either driver will be cited. Greenfield Road was closed for 45 minutes while the vehicles were removed.
