Holyoke student wins the nationwide high school visual art competition

Sweeney's piece will be hanging in the U.S. Capitol building starting in June

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The winner of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition was announced Monday.

Mark Sweeney, a student at Holyoke Catholic, was declared the winner by Congressman Richard Neal at the school in Chicopee.

Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors the nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation.

Sweeney said he found out he was the winner when his mom made a phone call to the organizers.

Mark Sweeney said, “My mom was actually asking how to pick it up, pick the art up, and it was on speaker phone and they told her while I was sitting in the car that I had actually won.”

Sweeney’s piece will be hanging in the U.S. Capitol building starting in June. He will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design next fall.
