SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Road surface and water main repairs are expected to be completed on Main Street in Springfield this weekend.
Springfield Public Works superintendent Chris Cignoli inspected the work area Thursday afternoon, and said traffic should be moving there again by late Saturday afternoon.
Water Commission Spokeswoman Joyce Mulvaney told 22News the department tries to take steps to prevent such disruptive occurrences. She said it’s more than just the age of the 100 year old water pipe that contributed to the water main bursting Wednesday “Corrosion of soil, shifting of soil, vibrations from traffic, construction. Age is a factor, [so is] the material the pipe is made of.”
Mulvaney said the Water and Sewer Commission spends millions of dollars on maintenance programs, trying to anticipate and prevent these water main breaks.
