Titans pick UMass receiver Tajae Sharpe to start final day of draft

Sharpe led the nation with 9.3 catches per game last season

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP/AP) – A UMass football player has been drafted to the NFL.

Wide receiver Tajae Sharpe was drafted to the Tennessee Titans. He was the team’s first pick on Saturday, the last day of drafting. Sharpe was picked during the fifth round of the draft, 140th overall.

UMass senior Foster Rignolla told 22News this news shows how the athletic team is improving. “It’s really exciting for this program, and it really shows what direction this place is heading in. This school has done amazing recruiting.”

Sharpe led the nation with 9.3 catches per game last season, and averaged 109.9 yards receiving per game.

The wide receiver is from Piscataway, New Jersey, and was elected to the 2015 Walter Camp All-American team.

Tennessee also drafted a Heisman Trophy winner in Alabama running back Derrick Henry on Friday night along with linebacker Kevin Dodd of Clemson, defensive tackle Austin Johnson of Penn State and Middle Tennessee safety Kevin Byard.
