Shots fired at State Trooper

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – State police say the suspect of a hit-and-run in Springfield shot at a Trooper and his police dog while being arrested in the overnight hours.

Media relations said that 15 minutes past midnight State Police got a report from Springfield Police that a car wanted in a hit-and-run crash minutes earlier was traveling southbound on I-91.

The suspect took exit 4 and abandoned the car at Balise Chevrolet and walked toward Main Street and East Columbus Avenue.

A State Trooper and his dog saw the suspect, and when he refused to stop and surrender the Trooper let the dog loose.

The suspect then fired one bullet from a handgun, missing the Trooper and his dog, according to police.

The police dog was able to subdue the suspect and he was arrested.

He was taken to Baystate Medical Center for injuries suffered during his arrest.

His identity has not been released.
