Workers were evacuated from the Stop & Shop store on North Main Street in East Longmeadow due to a fire about 40 minutes the scheduled opening Friday morning.

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WWLP) – Workers at the Stop & Shop in East Longmeadow were evacuated from the store Friday morning. East Longmeadow Fire Chief Paul Morrissette told 22News that the evacuation was caused by an electrical fire in the cooler section of the supermarket.

Morrissette said that the fire started at around 6:20 A.M. (about 40 minutes before the North Main Street store was scheduled to open), causing that section of the building to fill with smoke. By 7:30, workers were still gathered in the store’s parking lot, waiting for the okay to re-enter. Morrissette told 22News that they had to wait for the health inspector to come assess the damage, and tell the store how they will proceed with the cleanup. He said it is likely much of the food in the coolers will be thrown out as a result.

The store is now open for customers.

Morrissette said he believes that this is the second fire in coolers at the Stop & Shop in recent years.

No one was injured in Friday morning’s fire.
