Springfield Police: Suspected drug dealer hid heroin in Monster Energy can

Springfield Police confiscated 71 bags of Heroin and $324 in cash.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Police arrested a man who they say was hiding 21 bags of heroin in a Monster Energy can on Wednesday.

Sgt. John Delaney told 22News that Narcotics Unit detectives received information about a “known” heroin dealer selling drugs from his Honda Civic near Main Street and Cumberland Street in Springfield at 11:30 a.m.

Sgt. Delaney says the officers observed the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Michael Cruz of Holyoke, making heroin sales from his car and arrested him. Delaney said that hidden inside a Monster Energy drink can inside the car, police found 21 bags of heroin stamped with an “NBA” logo. They allegedly found 50 more bags of heroin with the same “NBA” logo in the trunk. Police also found $324 in cash.

Sgt. Delaney said Cruz got out of the police car and tried running away while being handcuffed, but did not get far. He was caught and brought to the police station.

Cruz was charged with the following:

  • Possession of Heroin With Intent to Distribute
  • Violation of a Drug Free School Zone (Gerena School)
  • Resisting arrest
