CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The House passed the bill on Wednesday, which specifies that canoes and kayaks are subject to the state requirement for boats to carry flotation devices.

Luke Brunelle of Brunelle’s Marina in South Hadley is in favor of kayakers and canoers having the same regulations as boaters. He thinks they should also have to register too.

“Some of the problems I’ve seen in early spring and late fall tragedies is that you don’t know who owns that kayak or owns a vessel, so there’s no identification or registration number attached to it,” said Brunelle.

The legislation would also require kayak instructors to have first aid training and certification from the American Canoe Association and the American Red Cross.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
