GLOUCESTER, Mass. (AP) — The scuba diver who died off the coast of Gloucester this weekend has been identified as a Hampshire County resident.
Authorities say 61-year-old Peter Piemonte of Belchertown was diving with several other people on Saturday off Gloucester’s Eastern Point when he went under water and did not resurface within an appropriate time. He was described by the Coast Guard as an experienced diver.
He was unresponsive when he was brought to the surface by one of the other divers.
The Coast Guard and Gloucester Emergency Services were called in, and took Piemonte to Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, where he died.
They are still looking into the cause of Piemonte’s death.
