SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WWLP) – Mount Holyoke College is mourning the loss of alumna Stacey Konwiser, a zookeeper who was mauled to death by a tiger in Florida on Friday.
22News spoke Monday with students who didn’t personally know Konwiser, but said her death has really affected the entire college. The 38-year-old graduated from Mount Holyoke in 2000, with a biology degree.
Konwiser was the lead tiger keeper at the Palm Beach Zoo in Florida. A spokesperson for the zoo said that on Friday, she was in a closed-off area where the animals eat and sleep, when she was mauled to death by a tiger.
A Mount Holyoke College student told 22News the tragedy shook up the entire college.
“It was just tragic, I couldn’t believe it. Something so horrifying happening like that. It definitely affected the student body today, I could tell,” student Avia Jacobs said.
Mount Holyoke sent 22News the following statement to 22News:
Our hearts go out to the family, colleagues and friends of Stacey Feige Konwiser, a member of Mount Holyoke’s Class of 2000. Stacey exemplified our mission of using liberal learning for purposeful engagement in the world, and we are very proud that she was an alumna.”
