SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is once again implementing closures on the elevated portion of Interstate 91 in Springfield this week.
MassDOT closed I-91 north from Sunday 11:00 p.m. to Monday 5:00 a.m. between Exit 6, which gets you onto East Columbus Avenue in the downtown area, to Exit 8, which is where you get off to catch 291. The same section was scheduled to close again Monday night starting at 11:00 p.m.
Drivers also need to know about Tuesday through Thursday, when a portion of I-91 south will be closed each night from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Starting Tuesday night, I-91 south is going to be closed from Exit 7/6, which is the temporary exit that’s used to divert traffic to the side streets, all the way to Union Street.
Anyone planning to head southbound during 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. needs to get off the highway at the temporary 7/6 exit, and go through downtown until you get to the Basketball Hall of Fame, where you can catch the on-ramp to I-91.
These closures are necessary so contractors can set and bolt down jersey barriers where traffic is currently routed. Electronic signs have been posted to warn drivers that they need to get off the highway during the closed hours.
