SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – MGM plans to start moving the historic First Spiritualist Church in the city’s South End on Tuesday.
The 130 year-old church was on risers earlier this month for the relatively short move to Union Street. The church has been located on nearby Bliss Street, right in the middle of where MGM plans to build their casino.
South End residents told 22News that it will be a moving process worth watching.
“For one thing, the church is so old, It’s very nice they won’t be knocking it down- and for two, it would be exciting to see that,” Germaine Kennedy of Springfield said.
“It’s great that MGM is actually saving this building. It’s a jewel in Springfield,” said David Glantz, owner of the nearby Buckeye Bros. Smoke Shop.
It is still unclear how long it will take to move the church to Union Street.
The First Spiritualist Church has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.
